Whatever you do...
And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus,
giving thanks to God the Father through Him. Colossians 3:17 NKJV
Read Colossians 3:12-17
I do not have a glamorous job. My hair is never perfect. I don’t have model hands and nails. And high fashion means that I have to reach to the top shelf in my closet for my choice of pants. But that’s not what work is all about, is it?!
Today’s verse says “whatever you do”. It doesn’t matter if you grow flowers, watch children, fix cars, are a high profile attorney or president of a large company. What matters most about your job is HOW you do it. Are you a hard worker? Are you dependable? Does “integrity” describe your work ethic? Or do people look at you and say, “I’m really glad I don’t have to work with them”?
Whether it’s your family, friends, acquaintances, or coworkers, every day you are being watched by hundreds of eyes. As a believer, you will be more sharply judged you by your actions. “You talk a big talk, Miss Christian, but your actions certainly don’t agree with what you say.”
Work is a privilege, a gift, a reason to be thankful. Remember, even Adam and Eve worked in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 2:15) and enjoyed the plentiful fruits of their work. Yes, you might be tired. Yes, you might be stressed. But you are blessed to have work, to have the opportunity to use your hands, creativity and intellect in exchange for a paycheck to purchase both necessities and leisure items. So next time you are tempted to just do enough to get by (because that is what so many other people do) remember that we don’t work for people. We work for the Most High God and should give Him thanks for the blessings!
Today: Strive to mirror Christ through your job, if necessary, use words.
